The ketubah dates back to at least 5th century BCE.
It was created as a document that spelled out the rights of the bride to compensation from the estate of the groom should she become divorced or widowed. The
ketubah was kept in the possession of the bride's mother as protection for the bride by the one person who the rabbis thought had the best consideration of the bride close to her heart.
